There’s a hiring freeze, but Oregon state agencies submit more than 1,200 requests for positions
In the six weeks since Gov. John Kitzhaber ordered a hiring freeze for state government, agencies have asked for special permission to fill more than 1,200 positions. A new committee empowered to grant exceptions to the freeze has approved 1,031 of those requests.
Community shines in response to flood
It is bittersweet that the floods came during a week when the city of Salem announced layoffs and budget cutbacks. The moves seem a responsible approach to the economy and the city’s tough financial times. But the week also gave residents a reminder of how much they value their public officials and first responders.
