The AmericanPublic Works Association is now taking applications for its Emerging Leaders Academy. This is a unique, national program that brings together public works professionals to give them tools and connections specifically for the field of public works. It is a year long process with an intensive weekend retreat in October, monthly homework assignments, and a group research project. Past research project topics have included: sustainability in public works, how to attract and retain emerging leaders, and using social media in public works. The current class has researched opportunities for student chapters of APWA at colleges and universities. Through this process the Emerging Leaders Academy allows participants to get to know one another, work together, and share experiences in public works.
Topics the program covers that are particularly important to public works are: media relations, time management and strategic thinking, team dynamics, and creating a culture of ethics. These are all viewed through the lens of public works and seen as important to developing as a professional in that field. The program also connects participants with past alumni of the Academy and with the leadership of APWA.
Applicants to the program submit a statement of their own leadership philosophy, what strengths they can contribute to the program, and a description of how they have been a change agent in their workplace. All of this drives the participants to start thinking about the opportunities in public works and their role in the future of the profession. Importantly it gets participants to start thinking about public works as a career, not just a job.
