Ben Kittelson, Kent Wyatt and Kirsten Wyatt are taking the ELGL #13Percent show on the road! They’ll visit Wrightsville Beach on Thursday, July 14 at 10:00 a.m. for the North Carolina Local Government Budget Association (NCLGBA) summer conference.

The conference agenda is chock full of interesting sessions, many that are taking place at the same time as other interesting sessions. (You know you’re staring down a quality conference when you feel conflicted by the scheduled concurrent sessions and want to attend all of them.)

We’re excited that some of our favorite ELGL friends will be in attendance: Heather Drennan, Josh Edwards, and Rafael Baptista (we’re not above shamelessly name dropping the great people who make ELGL tick).

We’re also excited to talk about the #13Percent issue with NCLGBA because as we recently discussed in this week’s GovLove podcast, we’re only going to move the needle off of 13 percent if we get all local government groups thinking and talking about ways that we achieve equity in local government leadership. The fact that a local government budget association is mindful of the #13Percent topic is progressive and meaningful and we’re pleased to take part in this conference.

The #13Percent initiative was borne from ELGL’s immediate reaction when women in the profession data was released in January 2015, and showed that only 13 percent of ICMA CAO members were women, and that the percentage had stayed the same for the past 30 years.

With the release of 2016 data showing that 15 percent of ICMA CAO members are women, ELGL is again focused on this issue, this time in a five part series where our members are encouraged to dig into the data set, learn more, and help us develop a work plan for our organization.

ELGL’s approach on this issue includes a few key points:

  • This is a topic that everyone must tackle – we can’t point fingers to another group and blithely assume that they can take care of it.
  • Issues like work-life balance and pay equity are not women’s issues.
  • It is imperative to engage elected officials in the #13Percent conversation.
  • Local governments are most successful when the leadership team reflects the community it serves.
