Word on the Street

  • From Sasha Althoff
  • My Nominations for Best City Hall is Effingham City Hall. Effingham City Hall is located in the heart of Effingham’s downtown area. There is a sculpture that sits out front called the Flame of Home by Leonardo Nierman, who also has sculptures located at the Vatican and all over the world. This sculpture inspired the city’s Sculpture on the Avenues program where an always changing variety of artists’ work is featured on the streets of their downtown.

Redwood City’s City Hall is at the center of Redwood City’s redevelopment efforts for the past several decades – central to our vibrant downtown and adjacent to our award-winning public library. The building is inviting and accessible, just like our awesome city staff. I love that the staff decorate their desks in themes throughout the year. Right now, if you walk past day or night, you’ll see our City Hall full of love and hearts for Valentines!

I love Redwood City. It has been declared the “Fairest weather in the country” by the meteorologists. The City Hall is beautifully architected, has the friendliest staff who patiently answer all questions. The city has lowered their crime rate by sponsoring free community activities all year long, outdoor giant screen showings, concerts on the square, dancing on the square, the best 4th of July parade for the local bands and clubs, ethnic celebrations.

Was born and raised in Effingham and am now raising my family here. The city hall is an amazing representation of the innovative and forward thinking that our small town embraces. Whether from business to the arts, our leaders make sure Effingham is a hub and beacon for all surrounding areas. Wouldn’t change my hometown in the slightest.

Having been a business located in Downtown Effingham since 1979, we can remember the previous City Hall located on the second floor of the City’s Firehouse. The current Effingham City Hall is now the Gem of downtown Effingham. The beautiful building is inviting and prominently located. Visitors are welcomed by “The Flame of Hope” Sculpture located directly in front of Effingham City Hall, which is a great starting point to view the Sculptures on the Avenue or to visit the many downtown businesses. Entering Effingham City Hall, visitors are greeted by beautiful photography showcasing the rich history of the City.

The City of Effingham seamlessly integrates forward thinking and innovation in business, industry, education, medicine, arts, and culture, with hometown hospitality and values. We are so proud to part of the Downtown Business District and to be able to work closely with the City of Effingham’s Mayor, Board Members, and Employees.

The City of Redwood City’s City Hall edifice is inviting and beautiful, the several paths of multi-modal access allow visitors to experience smart choices in ground cover and shrubbery, enjoy convenient seat walls, and find shelter in the canopies of large Redwoods and Cedars. The interior is well appointed with accessible counter spaces, warm smiles & customer service, and ample areas to connect with friends. Hosting the San Mateo County seat for much of its history, there are several memorials on site, honoring our local veterans, show casing our sister city relationships, and celebrating our 150 year anniversary. We are a welcoming city, proud to share our cultural diversity, including all in respectful civic engagement.

The grounds of City Hall are beautifully landscsped lending for a gathering place to meet people, read a book or enjoy your lunch under an enormous redwood tree.
