Since our inception in 2011, ELGL has become the fastest growing, most inclusive professional association serving local government professionals. Our Board of Directors – Ben Kittelson, Dan Weinheimer, Kent Wyatt, and Stacy Schweikhart – met recently to create a strategic vision that supports our commitment to transparency, growth, and programming.
Your responses to a recent member survey guided our discussion. We especially focused on what you value most about ELGL. The Board developed action items for continuing to provide what you love about ELGL, while building a solid foundation that is financially sustainable and provides resource for additional programming.
The key characteristics of who we are and how we are working to strengthen local government are:
We will focus our resources on these commitments:
We are a welcoming, supportive community with an unrivaled passion for public service.
We are a catalyst for new ideas and innovation.
We provide unique, accessible and relevant professional development opportunities that cultivate, attract and retain talent.
We believe that leadership in our communities should reflect those we serve, and thus we work to expand diversity and inclusion at all levels of local government.
We create opportunities for our members to share their stories and expertise to inspire and humanize local government.
We celebrate success and initiate both programs and conversations aimed at making public service enjoyable.
Highlights from the FY18 Budget:
- Inclusion of salary for a full-time Executive Director. ($80,000 base)
- Revision of member dues. ($15/student; $30/member; $300/all-in; $250/job posts only)
- Professional development events including Pop-Up Conferences, the annual conference, and monthly webinars.
- Further development of our member database management, website and other digital member services.
We are raising dues. The student rate will be $15/year, the individual rate will be $30/year, and the business and organization rate will be $300.
Here’s why: It costs ELGL approximately $90 per member to provide our current services and events. The increase in dues does not fully balance the costs per member. We will aggressively seek partnerships and other appropriate revenue streams. The Board felt the increase was necessary regardless of whether we hired a Executive Director.
ELGL offers the most value of any local government organization, including:
- access to a national network with members from all functions of local government,
- monthly webinars,
- an opportunity to contribute your voice and expertise as a columnist or project leader,
- a dynamic job board for both posters and seekers,
- unique members-only content and the opportunity to participate in our coveted award programs.
Plus, we are adding to our programming. More GovLove. More Webinars. More Columns. More events. In the coming year we will add a reputable best practices inventory, an expanded member profile feature and a one-of-a-kind vendor directory.
We remain focused on creating opportunities for our members. We will offer valuable opportunities for our members to gain experience and develop valuable leadership skills. We will be issuing a call for members who want to become regular content contributors, serve on our finance and membership committees and assist with the planning and execution of professional development offerings.
As we move forward we ask that if you have ideas, praise or concerns you take the time to share them with a member of the Board. We are here to serve you and to make ELGL an invaluable part of your personal and professional life.
