Michael Baskin

Foundation for Civic Leadership

My favorite adventure in life was…. quitting my corporate gig to go get my hands dirty in city government! Although the corporate gig allowed me to drive a train which is up there for favorite adventures.
What is the most local government thing you have done on vacation? Somehow found myself on the Fairfax County Government website while vacationing in Kenya…and contacted the webmaster to see who developed it because I was impressed with the UX. Deserted a perfectly lovely Vietnamese coffee to follow trash sweepers in Ho Chi Minh City to understand their municipal waste stream.
The most important decision that I’ve made in life was… to be present.
If I was booking the guests for the GovLove podcast, I would book… Fred LaLoux.
If I couldn’t work in my current position, I would… be a camp counselor.
The book on your bookshelf that you intend to read but haven’t is… Just one? (Also, there is a lovely Japanese word ‘tsundoku’ which we do not have which is for books we purchase but do not read that then form piles (credit here)
Blue or black ink? Black from a Pilot G2 0.35 or a Sharpie Fine Line.
If you could only have bread OR cheese for the rest of your life, which would you choose? Cheese. Cabot Cloth Bound. Can I eat other things? It doesn’t matter. Let’s do this. How do we select this option in registration?
What is your recent personal and professional accomplishment? Circled the globe, slowly.
What’s one thing you want to be sure to do/see while you’re in the Golden area? Learn from all of you and find some local gov rock stars interested in civic participation to hook into a project we’re working on at the Foundation for Civic Leadership to renew our shared commitment to each other’s participation and grow voter engagement in all of our communities.
If I was writing the questions for the feature, I would have asked… who is your professional crush who you would be most thrilled to meet at ELGL? (Question credit goes to Kat Klosek of JHU GovEx)
