May seems to be a celebratory month. It is a month where we celebrate everything from Cinco De Mayo, Public Service Week and Mother’s Day. May also happens to be Mental Health Awareness Month, as well as, We <3 Small Biz Month in the City of Delray Beach. Given the importance of celebrating small businesses and acknowledging the need for our employees to take care of our mental health, a collaborative team of women from the City of Delray Beach, Delray Beach Downtown Development Authority, Delray Beach Community Redevelopment Authority and Healthier Delray Beach brainstormed a creative way to commemorate both causes. What we came up with was an event called, “Brain Break”.
Brain Break is an event created to engage our employees and business community through play. It will promote positive mental health and well being for our downtown employees, business owners and visitors. The goals of the event are to create awareness for Mental Health Awareness month, We <3 Small Biz month and most importantly, have FUN! This event also gives the team the opportunity to test out a pop-up event in an under-utilized park within Downtown Delray Beach.

In true local gov’t fashion this pop-up event is being produced on a shoe string budget, but a ton of collaboration. The Delray Beach Parks & Rec Department is bringing the fun, featuring the following games: giant Jenga, cornhole, giant Connect 4 and giant chess. Our partners are also providing adult coloring books, meditation station, craft corner, music, food and much more. It is our hope to grow this into a regular scheduled “Adult Recess” to promote livability and placemaking in our downtown core, activate our parks, engage our employees and business owners on a more regular basis. So even if you aren’t in Delray Beach on May 24th, we encourage you to take a “Brain Break” and support your local small businesses
