Lessons on Leadership with Bonnie Svrcek
Bonnie Svrcek was named the City Manager of Lynchburg, VA on July 1, 2016. Prior to that she served as Lynchburg’s Deputy City Manager for 17 years. Svrcek was also the President of the International City/County Management Association (ICMA), she was the second woman to serve in that role and the first non-CAO female president. Under her leadership ICMA expanded their graduate student chapters and made addressing the gender disparity in CAO positions a priority.

Building Communities: What’s love got to do with it? – Hyong Yi
Hyong Yi is the Assistant City Manager of Charlotte, NC and prior to that served as the budget director for Mecklenburg County, NC for 10 years. In 2014, his wife died of cancer and on the anniversary of her passing he chose to honor her by handing out 100 love notes to strangers on the street around Charlotte. This act of love and remembrance caught on and spread. Now he’ll share his story of love and how love should be apart of the work of local governments as they build and shape communities.

Marc Nelson of the City of Roanoke and Geoff Durham of the Durham Chamber of Commerce will share how their respective communities charted new paths for economic growth by re-purposing existing infrastructure, retaining and cultivating an existing workforce, building walkable communities and leveraging the livability aspects of their regions. They will also share how they got started, identified their key partners, developed their value propositions, and the tactics they used to reshape the landscape of their communities. Learn how your community can reinvent itself by paying attention to the creative class, expanding on existing innovative technologies and changing the way you think about your community.

In June of 2015, ELGL (#ELGLWorkLife) hosted a series of articles from its members about work-life balance. Posts written by men and women of all stages of life reflected that this is a topic of great importance to our current and future local government leaders. While some of the solutions involved individual choices, many of the takeaways focused on the need to address this question from an organizational standpoint. In this session, our distinguished panel will share real examples of work-life tools they have developed for their work force and share the challenges and benefits they have experienced in using these tools in today’s local government and private work force.

The Battle for Local Control
Local governments for years have served as the intermediary between their constituents and the state legislature, often balancing local support for certain policies against mandates issued from the state capitol. Nowhere has that balance been more tested than in North Carolina, where recent legislation concerning election districts, utilities, and airports – not to mention bathrooms – has placed some local government administrators in the precarious position of adhering to the values of their community while simultaneously implementing unpopular policies. This session will explore some of the approaches local governments are deploying to maintain that balance between the person on the street and democratically elected officials.
