Mark Funkhouser
Mark Funkhouser is the publisher of Governing magazine. He served as mayor of Kansas City, Mo., from 2007 to 2011. Prior to being elected mayor, Funkhouser was the city’s auditor for 18 years and was honored in 2003 as a Governing Public Official of the Year. Before becoming publisher of Governing, he served as director of the Governing Institute. Funkhouser is an internationally recognized auditing expert, author and teacher in public administration and its fiscal disciplines. He holds an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in public administration and sociology from the University of Missouri at Kansas City, an M.B.A. in accounting and finance from Tennessee State University and a master’s degree in social work from West Virginia University.

Sheila Hamilton
Sheila Hamilton is a five-time Emmy Award winning journalist and the author of “All the Things We Never Knew.” Sheila’s storytelling resume runs through film, commercial television, radio and print. She began her career as an Associate Producer for public broadcasting, and then anchored and reported commercial television news for KTVX in Salt Lake City, Utah and KATU in Portland, Oregon. Sheila currently hosts the Kink morning show in Portland, Oregon where she was recently voted Oregon’s Best Radio Personality. Sheila also writes cover stories for About Face Magazine and authors the blog, SheilaHamilton.com Sheila is a frequent speaker and emcee for her favorite causes- mindful mental health and empowerment for girls. She serves on the board of Girls Inc., an organization empowering girls to be strong, smart and bold and The Flawless Foundation, a mental health advocacy organization.

I’m Ann Friedman. I’m a freelance journalist who writes about gender, media, technology, and culture. You can find my weekly column at NYmag.com. I also contribute regularly to The Los Angeles Times, The Gentlewoman, The New Republic, The New York Times Book Review, ELLE, The Guardian, andLos Angeles magazine. I co-host a podcast, Call Your Girlfriend, with my good friend Aminatou Sow. Every Friday I send out an email newsletter full of digital treats. I also make hand-drawn pie charts. I live in Los Angeles. I grew up in eastern Iowa, studied journalism at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and have since moved back and forth between the coasts. (I prefer the west.) Before I became a freelance writer, I was the executive editor of GOOD magazine. After I was fired along with my colleagues in 2012, we created a crowd-funded magazine called Tomorrow.

What the US Open Taught Me about Large Event Planning
Every jurisdiction may come across a major event that creates opportunities to build community pride and support the local economy. These can range from benefit concerts to sporting events – heck, you may even take a fresh look at how you capitalize on the state fair. Hunter George, the former communications director for Pierce County, Wash., will share what he learned about large events during his time on the planning team for the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, and how those efforts continue to pay dividends for community partners. His presentation will touch on event management, logistics, media relations, visitor engagement, and a collaborative approach to community outreach.

Power to the People: Electric Utilities as Community Partners
Utility co-ops often do not receive the credit they deserve when a partner in economic development is needed, or when someone is mapping out their career path. Debra Smith and Matt Michel shatter the unknown by illustrating how electric utilities can be partners in economic development experiences, share perspectives of former municipal managers now on the outside looking in, and highlight community presence efforts. Debra spent 17 years at the Eugene Water and Electric Board, most recently as Assistant Manager in charge of Operations. She now leads Central Lincoln People’s Utility District as General Manager. She is joined by Matt Michel, General Manager of Lane Electric. He previously led utility operations for the City of Canby, and prior to that was legal counsel specializing in municipal law, utility law, and federal litigation.
