Tickets are $35 for students, $75 for members, and $100 for non-members (includes ELGL membership).

Lessons in Leadership

  • Lois Scott From 2011-2015, Lois Scott, served as the Chief Financial Officer for the City of Chicago, the first woman to ever serve in that capacity. With over 30 years of finance experience, Mayor Rahm Emanuel entrusted Lois and the City’s finance team with an annual budget of $7.5 billion and assets of $32 billion.  She was the most requested speaker of the Emanuel administration, including keynoting conferences in China, D.C. and served as special advisor to the Clinton Global Initiative on infrastructure and finance.In 2011, Lois co-founded and chaired the Municipal CFO Forum with the Harris School of the University of Chicago.  The Forum convenes the CFO’s of America’s 30 largest cities for discussion at conferences twice each year and provides a powerful springboard for introduction of new ideas and adoption of best practices.  Lois is well known as one of the founders of Women in Public Finance, a professional organization started in 1995 that now serves 1,500 people in the finance industry through 12 chapters across the country.  She was also the driving force behind creation of the “Women of the Year” event honoring the accomplishments of women in the public finance field.  In 1997, Lois was selected to serve as one of 15 White House Fellows and tasked with advising President Clinton’s administration on the financial crisis in Southeast Asia. In 2011, she won lifetime achievement honors from the public finance industry and won the 2015 “Freda Johnson” award for trailblazing women in finance.

Mayor Nan Whaley from the City of Dayton, Ohio shares the innovative and progressive policies that will influence the future of our communities and of public service including preschool, talent development and parental leave.

Nan Whaley’s career is distinguished by her commitment to public service, civic involvement and interest in local government. First elected to the Dayton City Commission in 2005, Nan Whaley was elected Mayor by Dayton voters in November of 2013, following two City Commission terms.

Nan Whaley is a pioneer in the creation of policies and benefits that promote a diverse workforce and strengthen recruitment of leaders to municipal service.  From expanded parental leave to innovative wellness efforts, Mayor Whaley champions workforce development both internally within the City of Dayton and strategically throughout the Dayton region.

Nan is committed to strengthening Dayton’s communities through thoughtful and strategic programming.  Mayor Whaley believes that strong neighborhoods and economic stability can only be achieved through a community-wide focus on education. Nan advocates to ensure that every student in Dayton attends a high performing school that prepares them for the opportunity to attend college, join the military or seek advanced training in a marketable job skill.  She is currently championing an effort to ensure that all Dayton children enter school ready to succeed by offering tuition assistance for high quality preschool for all four year olds.
