Since ELGL is not a big fan of icebreakers and since we would rather not know what animal you want to be, this blog feature will serve as a means of introducing new members. While you won’t learn about their favorite animal, you will learn about their ideal Sunday morning, which dead people would they FaceTime with, and which song best describes their life.

Most interesting project you’ve worked on in your current position:

While completing my graduate education I have had the opportunity to obtain the Certified Public Manager certification (CPM).  This has allowed me to work with state and local governmental employees from a wide range of backgrounds.  One of the requirements of the process is to complete a capstone project that could be submitted and handed off to the appropriate authority.

My group chose to work for the inclusion of residential fire sprinklers in new home construction.  At this moment in time, starting with new home construction is the most feasible because of the cost aspect of the idea.  Working on public awareness and trying to get the home builders to include residential fire sprinklers in the initial planning discussion would yield the most dividends at this current stage.   Currently we have a builder that is interested in offering this service to a home buyer.

What do you think about when you are driving to work/school?

I am usually listening to what is on Iowa Public Radio and National Public Radio.  Keeping up to date on what happened through the day and about the current events that we should be following is important for any citizen but even more so for someone working towards a career in public administration.

Most recent concert you attended:

Would be my partner’s band, he is a keyboardist, and they had a pretty good tour of Iowa going.

Proudest career/school accomplishment:

Being nominated for membership in Pi Alpha Alpha, which is the public administration academic honor society for excellence and achievement.

What song best describes your life?

Take a Walk by Passion Pit.

While some say sleep on a problem and it will not appear so bad in the morning.  For me, a walk does that, every time.

Suggest two or three topics for the ELGL Annual Conference at the Kennedy School on October 4.

  • Leveraging green technology to bolster the economic resilience of a jurisdiction.
  • The importance of supporting fellowship and internship programs at all levels of government.

If you could FaceTime or Skype with three people either dead or alive, who would they be?

  • Octavian
  • Dwight Eisenhower
  • My aunt Pam

But in no particular order in that line up, each has an immeasurable amount of impact on the way I think and understand things.

Your work/school mentors:

Favorite thing to do on a Sunday morning:

Watch the morning political shows.  Even if you are tuned into the news cycle and what is happening in the world all week by watching those programs you will still learn something.

(Fill in the blank) Government is…..

a wonderful and useful mechanism to improve the lives of citizens even if they are totally unaware of what is going on behind the scenes.

(Fill in the blank) ELGL is….

organization that I am getting to know but will be useful in growing in my desired field of public administration.

Is there any question I should have asked you?

If everything went according to your plan, where do you see yourself in 5 years?
