Part two of this Ohio/Michigan Adventure started today when we arrived in Detroit to scout locations for #ELGL17. Tonight we’re heading out to dinner (expect some restaurant recs) and will see the sights near our hotel (the official conference hotel for #ELGL17).

We just wrapped up a great session on the OSU campus about #13Percent, the Diversity Dashboard project, and the ways that women in Ohio can engage to get more women into leadership in cities and counties here. Thanks to the OCMA board for sponsoring food and drinks for the meet up.
Here’s the link to Stacy’s presentation. Want to get more involved with #13Percent in Ohio? Email Stacy.

I made it to Ohio and was warmly welcomed by the Schweikhart family’s Duke fan paraphernalia collection. Actually, JJ Redick scares me a lot, so I was a little worried they were going to make me sleep in their basement (which is painted Duke blue) but luckily I got their sweet guest bedroom with nary a Grayson Allen Fathead in sight.
Slept well, up and at ’em, and headed to Columbus for a day of #OCMA17 networking and local gov learning. More pictures and posts to come!
One quick observation from the Dayton Airport – check out this great economic development ad. A reminder of how critical water infrastructure is for business development and growth. Reminds me of my favorite water documentary, which we haven’t talked about for a few years here at ELGL. Might have to do a GovLove interview with the producers to find out how things have changed since it was first created. If you have a minute, I highly suggest watching Liquid Assets.

I’m in the air right now, flying to Dayton where Stacy is picking me up for an night at her house before we head to Columbus for #OCMA17. #FunFact: Stacy’s husband (Mark) is an honorary ELGL member and he tried to convince their kids that I steal spoons from every house I visit. Regardless of this falsehood, I come prepared with Trailblazer shirts for the Schweikhart kids and good bourbon for Stacy and Mark.
I took Lyft to the airport. I ran a cost-benefit analysis and realized it was cheaper to ride share than park at the airport. Plus, I wanted to support Lyft, especially in the wake of this HR worst practices news about their competitor, Uber. So often, we hear people say they want government run like a business. I think we can all agree that Susan Fowler Rigetti’s experience is definitely not something we’d want to replicate in our cities, counties, and districts.

I leave tomorrow morning for a long trip to Ohio and Michigan with Stacy Schweikhart and Bridget Doyle Kozlowski. We’re hosting two receptions on Wednesday and curating three sessions on Thursday at the Ohio City Manager’s Association conference in Columbus. We’ll share updates from our trip on this blog, and we’ll also tweet using the conference hashtag, #OCMA17.
Our events on Wednesday, February 22:
Our sessions on Thursday, February 23:
- 10:15 a.m. in Governor’s D: Civic Engagement – Beyond the Buzzword
- 12:30 p.m. in Governor’s E: Tomorrow’s Leaders Today (Workforce of the Future)
- 1:45 p.m. in Governor’s D: What to Expect with Your First Job (Student Session)
After OCMA ends on Friday, we’re driving up to Detroit to scout locations for #ELGL17, take some photos and videos to get people pumped for the best local government conference ever, and ensure that all of our conference planning is locked down and ready to go for May 11 and 12, 2017.[/vc_column_text][vc_separator color=”green” border_width=”3″][vc_video link=”https://youtu.be/ItkK0clD7zU”][/vc_column][/vc_row]
