Ryan Hanschen is at the heart of the City of Boulder’s efforts to make public participation more inclusive and meaningful. He leads with a mix of humility, creativity, and a strong commitment to equity.
Ryan played a key role in developing Boulder’s award-winning Community Connectors model, which brings underrepresented voices into city planning and decision-making. The goal is to make sure everyone — not just a few — has the tools and confidence to engage with their local government.
As community engagement manager, Ryan also mentors a talented team working on critical issues like language access, climate justice, fair wages, transportation, and reimagining the future of Boulder’s municipal airport.
Ryan’s impact extends beyond Boulder. He chairs the training and professional development committee for International Association of Public Participation USA and supports national efforts to improve how local governments engage with communities.
