5 Tips for Rethinking Your Resume

  • Not sure where to begin? Write a Master Résumé Document first. Put everything in there. You may not send it all, but you will always have it to call back on.
  • It is important to catch the reader’s attention early in your résumé . Include a relevant headline, a strong career profile, and a summary of your major achievements in the top half of the first page.
  • These days, a stand alone objective statement is not the best way to communicate your aspirations. Best to mention it in your career summary, without taking the focus off what you can do for them.
  • Functional résumés are not received with a lot of enthusiasm these days. Best to use a chronological format, in reverse date order. Forget the skills based format.
  • How many pages? As long, or as short, as necessary to tell your unique story. Keep it relevant and showcase your achievements.
