City Hall Selfie Day is My Olympic Games

A group of people in pink attire inspired by the "Barbie" movie taking a City Hall Selfie in Collierville, TN, on Aug. 15, 2023.

Today’s Morning Buzz is brought to you by Jennifer Casey, Public Information Officer for the Town of Collierville, TN. Connect with Jennifer on LinkedIn and X/Twitter.

  • What I’m reading: Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt
  • What I’m working on: Ribbon-cutting details for our fitness center!
  • A funny TikTok I saw recently: The “Breathing Realtor” who has a good sense of humor with his Gen Z video editor. We have to enjoy what we do! (That’s foreshadowing, folks. 😉)

City Hall Selfie Day is my Olympic Games.

The games start on Aug. 15, but I spend the off-season training by taking pictures outside of city halls on vacation, networking with coworkers who could be potential group selfie participants, and paying close attention to trends that could translate into prize-winning selfies.

My training and gametime statistics speak for themselves. In 10 years of public service, I have:

  • Posted 55 City Hall Selfies on my personal social media.
  • Snapped City Hall Selfies in 16 different cities; one of my favorites is Fountain Lake, AR, where there is a cattle gate keeping hooved residents out (or in?).
  • Shared a City Hall Selfie with 1 celebrity: Jimmy Smits!
  • Been awarded 4 City Hall Selfie Day category prizes; my coworker Susan won best pet
  • Announced 1 engagement with my fiancé on City Hall Selfie Day just last year!

Do I always go for the gold on City Hall Selfie Day? Absolutely!

But the day is about much more than posting pictures.

It’s about having fun with the event, creating new ideas with my team, and showing the world that we enjoy representing our community.

When we take pride in our jobs, we benefit in so many ways! And I believe City Hall Selfie Day checks all of these boxes:

  • Increases Motivation: When we enjoy what we do, we’re more likely to put in the effort and go the extra mile, leading to higher productivity.
  • Improves Mental Health: Engaging in work we enjoy can reduce stress, anxiety, and the risk of burnout.
  • Enhances Creativity and Innovation: When you’re passionate about your work, you’re more likely to think outside the box and come up with innovative solutions.
  • Better Work Relationships: Positive engagement with coworkers can create a supportive and collaborative work environment, improving teamwork and communication.
  • Personal Fulfillment: When our careers align with our personal values and interests, it increases our overall life satisfaction.
  • Positive Impact on Others: Enthusiasm can be contagious, inspiring and motivating those around you. This can lead to a more positive and productive work environment for everyone.

So go for the gold and reap all the positive awards that come from participating in City Hall Selfie Day. I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces on Aug. 15. Let the games begin!
