Everyone talks about public engagement as if it is the answer to rampant public mistrust and poor participation in local democracy. But is it? Sure it sounds like it is a good thing to do – like eating broccoli. But, can it be tasteless, unsatisfying or worse? Does it actually improve civic health or is it the next big public administration fad?
If you have been experimenting with various types of civic engagement and want to go deeper or if you are a skeptic, but wish to explore this rapidly developing movement, the Davenport Institute at Pepperdine University has a three day intensive training program for you.
Taught by practitioners using the adult learning model, the Professional Certificate in Advanced Public Engagement is offered at the gorgeous Pepperdine campus in Malibu, CA on January 19 – 21.
You will be joined by local government folks and others involved in the profession to discuss the latest thinking and techniques in involving residents in the decisions that really matter to them for better policy-making and enhanced confidence in local government.
Your peers and the trainers will spark serous conversation about how best to attempt civic engagement, and you will have the chance to work through an engagement challenge for your agency with the help of others. Topics include: getting engagement right from the start, exploring leading edge engagement techniques, engaging marginalized communities, the role of technology in public engagement, facilitating difficult conversations, and leading efforts from where you are right NOW in your career.
Find out more and apply here, or feel free to call Ashley Trim at 310-506-6878 for more information. And don’t skimp on the broccoli either!!
