What was the very first paying job you held (that you paid taxes on)?

Dairy Queen. It was the best job. I used my first couple of paychecks to buy an expensive pair of sunglasses.

What was your: undergraduate institution? Graduate institution? What was/were your degree(s) in?

UNC Charlotte: BA Political Science; Master of Public Administration

What class(es) (if any) are applicable to your job today?

Every class prepares you for the work you’ll eventually be doing in some way.

What book are you currently reading? Would you recommend it?

My free time is currently taken up by a 2.5 year old. I do not recommend it (just kidding!).

What’s the best networking advice for job seekers you’ve heard or shared?

Invite people in your field for coffee. Ask how they got to be where they are and learn from them.

What’s the fastest way to NOT get a job or internship with you? (e.g. what should potential applicants avoid doing if they were to ever interview with you for a position).

Not editing your resume. If I find common mistakes it shows laziness and lack of attention to details. That’s not someone I want working with me.

Why should an undergraduate student consider a career working in local government?

It is so rewarding working to better your own community. The work you do directly impacts where you live and you can see the change happen immediately.

Do you have a work or life motto? What is it?

Front Page Test: If it wouldn’t look good on the front page, it’s not the right thing.
