So far, what’s your proudest accomplishment in 2019?
Being able to use my skills as a writer and organizer to help my new city come together and find strength and support after a series of hate crimes. Turns out that Captain and Tennille were right, “Love will keep us together.” That, and (hopefully) winning the Knope Award for Best Parks and Open Spaces for Evans Creek Preserve!
Valentines Day was in February. What do you “love” about your job?
I fall more and more in love with my job every day. I know…it sounds like Bad RomCom dialogue, but it is as true as it is cheesy. I get to do what I love: tell stories, write, dream up crazy stuff and then get other creative people to buy into it and make it happen… it’s a lot like not working, but it pays much better.

Have done something so wonderful that the correct question to an answer on Jeopardy! Is “Who is Sharon Gavin?”
10 Year Challenge! What were you doing in 2009? How did it help you reach your current position?
In 2009 I volunteered with AmeriCorps VISTA and ended up with a year-long assignment in Portland, Oregon. That year was a mid-career reset for me that not only introduced me to the Pacific Northwest – the place I now call home – it got me back in touch with my career roots by allowing me to work with local government agencies to encourage community engagement and volunteering. I also got to give away money through a micro-grant program.
(Complete the sentence) The first time I heard about ELGL was…
When I worked at the City of Beaverton. Several people there were members and when I saw the photos from the ELGL conference at Edgefield I was a little jealous that I didn’t get to be Billie the Beaver for that event.
What question should we have asked?
