ICMA is always a terrific learning experience, not to mention a great time. The keynote speakers and breakout sessions provide useful tools and information, as well as inspiration to bring back to the office. I particularly enjoy the League of Women in Government Symposium. It is so empowering to be in a room full of strong, intelligent, successful women that love local government as much as I do. All of this makes me excited to attend ICMA in Nashville this year, but what I am most looking forward to stems from my involvement with CivicPRIDE.

CivicPRIDE is the first nationally recognized LGBTQIA+ professional association for local government management. I attended their last two mixers at ICMA and signed up to become more involved in Baltimore last year. Throughout these last twelve months I helped write CivicPRIDE’s new mission statement, partnered to create a networking event in Kansas City during Pride month, wrote two blog posts, and helped plan this year’s ICMA CivicPRIDE mixer – Stonewall to Nashville: 50 Years of Progress. Being involved with something so dear to my heart and seeing it grow as it is just starting out has been so rewarding for me. I connect with members of the group virtually about once a month but have only met a few of them in person. I am so excited to see some of the people that I have come to respect face-to-face for the first time in Nashville, and to spend time with other queer local government professionals. I am also very eager to see the mixer that I helped plan come to life. I cannot wait to attend ICMA this year!
