Americans refer to Canada affectionately as America’s hat, but for Detroit, we’re looking south on our northern neighbor. Detroit is the only state in the contiguous 48 that can look southward into Canada.
From Detroit, there are two ways to enter Canada: The Ambassador Bridge and the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel, which both link Windsor, Ontario and Detroit. Fun fact: The bridge is the busiest single border crossing in North America. Canada’s legal drinking age of 19 makes Windsor’s bars, clubs, and casino very popular destinations for Michigan’s late teens. Windsor has some of the greatest views of the Detroit skyline around. There’s also the “Windsor ballet,” a euphemism for some of the more… colorful entertainment options in Windsor. Pro tip: don’t Google this from your work computer.
Feel like going international while you’re in Detroit? Depending on traffic, it can take as few as 10 minutes to get from U.S. to Canada using either border crossing to Windsor.
