Weekly Update: Birthdays, Pop Ups, Facebook Live!

Posted on June 18, 2017

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]Dear ELGL members,

A surprising number of people are surprised that Kent and I are married. Maybe it’s just courtesy (“oh, you’re MARRIED?”) or maybe it’s just a belief in coincidence that two people with the last name Wyatt who both live in Oregon happened to found a niche professional association for local government.

Regardless, it’s always funny when people are surprised. So to clear things up, I’ll confirm that yes, I am married to Kent. We even have children! This weekend those children and I took Kent to the beach to celebrate Father’s Day. It was one of the first nice weekends we’ve had in Oregon, and we went to Newport, Nye Beach, and Yaquina Head Lighthouse. All of those are must visits if you’re in Oregon anytime soon.

What I’m reading:

What I’m listening to:

  • Despacito. It’s Father’s Day, and it’s Kent’s favorite jam. Plus, it’s super catchy. Note: update – just Googled what the lyrics mean… will stop listening to it with our children.

What I’m watching:

  • Orange is the New Black. I used to love this show for the backstory on how women end up in prison (hint: it’s almost always connected to the men they love), but now it’s just a soapy drama with lots of action.

[/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Birthdays” color=”chino”][vc_column_text]I bought and mailed my Birthday n’ Books gift this week – are you signed up? It’s one of my favorite ELGL programs, because it directly connects individual ELGL members with each other, to share books they loved or enjoyed.

I sent my Books Buddy (a term I am trying to get the whole program to adopt, but Kent and Ben are skeptical…) two books: a frothy summer read and my favorite book of 2016.

If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s not too late – you can get matched with someone, and make a cool connection with another ELGL based on books![/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Pop Ups” color=”chino”][vc_column_text]We had our first planning conference call for the #ELGLPopUp series, scheduled in 2017 for September 22 in Portland, Dallas, Kansas City, and Charlotte.

The theme of this year’s pop up series if “stuff you should have learned in school” and we’ll explore topics that are relevant today, that maybe weren’t when you were in undergrad or graduate school.

We have great teams lined up to plan and help in each of the location, but we always welcome new faces to the conference planning team. If you’re interested in volunteering, send us an email. In the next week, we’ll be setting agendas for each location, so you can plan ahead to attend one location of the most fun day in local government![/vc_column_text][vc_text_separator title=”Facebook Live!” color=”chino”][vc_column_text css_animation=”none”]Started something new this week… each month we’ll be doing a new Facebook Live update about ELGL’s activities. It’s yet another way to connect the work we’re doing back to our membership, with the understanding that we need to use lots of different communications tools to share our story.

So far, so good… we had some good participation during the Facebook Live event (with no publicity, because I wasn’t sure how it’d go…) and we reached 1,512 people as of this posting.

In the future, I can see us using Facebook Live to share news about job postings for All-In members, conference registration and agenda information, and other “big” news. We don’t want to swamp your newsfeed with ELGL stuff, but also want to use this medium to share information.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
